Birthday<\/h2>
Today is my birthday\u2014I\u2019m celebrating it\u2014but it still doesn\u2019t feel good when people say \u201chappy birthday\u201d to me. And that\u2019s because of the word \u201cbirthday.\u201d After all, it implies \u201cgetting older.\u201d And how frustrating is it that this actually imposes a limitation\u2014because of the age you\u2019re getting\u2014and because everyone congratulates you on it (which, by the way, is super sweet), it\u2019s really hard to explain to people that I\u2019d actually rather not have that.     <\/span><\/p>
And as much as I love it when people congratulate me on my birthday, I find it really hard when you congratulate me on turning a year older. And what matters most to me is that when you turn a year older, you reach a certain age, and that age is tied to where you are in life right now. So I\u2019ve turned 37 now, and that means you start doing the math and realize you\u2019re already heading toward the halfway point. If, for example, 100 years is the halfway point of what you\u2019ll eventually reach.     <\/span><\/p>
But who\u2019s to say you\u2019ll live to be 100? Maybe I\u2019ll only get to blow out a few more candles\u2014or maybe as many as 150. Who knows! And that\u2019s what I find really tricky about the word \u201cgetting older\u201d\u2014because you\u2019re immediately putting a label on it, and that label makes you feel older, and it also means you\u2019re heading toward a certain age where you might start having health issues.    <\/span><\/p>
Because how many people say things like, \u201cYeah, you\u2019re getting older, aren\u2019t you?\u201d and \u201cYeah, that\u2019s just part of getting older.\u201d And you hear all those stories all around you, so you end up forming a certain image of what it means to grow old. And I don\u2019t like that. Because I decide for myself how I\u2019ll grow old and how I\u2019m growing old.     <\/span><\/p>
The English are so good at that\u2014they say \u201chappy birthday\u201d or \u201cfijne geboortedag\u201d\u2014and that\u2019s something I\u2019d like to do more myself, I always try to congratulate everyone on their birthday, but also others, because with our words, we can be so hard on ourselves; we can start to form certain images that don\u2019t yet belong to us and that might never belong to us at all.  <\/span><\/p>
I\u2019d like to end on a positive note and focus on the person\u2014not on their age, not on getting older\u2014and I want us all to really think about what we say and how we think, like: \u201cYeah, once you reach a certain age, you need reading glasses.\u201d \u201cYeah, I have a hard time getting out of bed because, well, I\u2019m a bit older now, so things don\u2019t come as easily anymore.\u201d   <\/span><\/p>
Because we see this all around us, we tend to accept it as true. Words like these have such a big impact on our lives\u2014and on our bodies\u2014which is why it\u2019s so important that we pay close attention not only to what we say, but also to what we wish for others. And that\u2019s why I\u2019m wishing myself a very happy birthday today.

Today is my birthday; I\u2019m celebrating my special day, but still, it doesn\u2019t feel quite right when people say \u201chappy birthday\u201d to me. And that has everything to do with the word \u201cbirthday\u201d<\/em> itself. In Dutch, we use the term \u201cverjaren<\/em>,\u201d which is directly tied to aging. And how strange is it that the idea of aging instantly implies a kind of limitation\u2014because of the age you\u2019re turning? Even though people mean it so kindly (and I truly appreciate that), it\u2019s still hard to explain that I\u2019d actually prefer not to be congratulated that way.    <\/p>
As much as I love<\/em> it when people celebrate my birthday<\/em>, I really struggle with being congratulated on my birthday<\/em>. For me, it\u2019s all about the fact that aging comes with a number\u2014and that number tends to say something about where you\u2019re expected to be in life. I just turned 37, and that automatically sets off this mental calculation\u2014you\u2019re getting close to the halfway point. If, say, 100 years is the number you\u2019re aiming for.   <\/p>
But who says I\u2019ll live to be 100? Maybe I only have a few more candles left to blow out… or maybe I\u2019ll blow out 150. Who knows! And that\u2019s exactly what I find difficult about the word \u201caging\u201d<\/em>\u2014 because<\/em>it labels you with something. It can make you feel<\/em> older, and it implies that you\u2019re heading into a phase where you\u2019re more likely to experience physical problems.    <\/p>
How often do people say things like, \u201cYeah, you\u2019re getting older,\u201d or \u201cThat\u2019s just part of getting older\u201d? We hear these things all the time, and they gradually shape our mindset about aging. And I\u2019m not okay with that. Because I<\/em> decide what aging means to me\u2014and how I choose to age.   <\/p>
The English language actually handles this part beautifully\u2014they say \u201chappy birthday<\/em>,\u201d which literally means \u201chappy day of birth<\/em>,\u201d and that\u2019s a sentiment I\u2019d love to embrace more in my own life. I always try to congratulate people on their day of birth<\/em>, and not just on getting another year older. Because our words are powerful. The way we speak to ourselves\u2014and to others\u2014can create ideas and expectations that aren\u2019t ours, and perhaps never will be.   <\/p>
So I want to end this on a positive note: I want us to focus on the person<\/em>, not their age. Not the number. Not the aging process. I want us to pay attention to how we speak and how we think. We say things like, \u201cYeah, at a certain age you need reading glasses,\u201d or \u201cGetting out of bed is hard these days\u2014must be getting older.\u201d    <\/p>
But when we hear these things often enough, we start to accept them as truth. And these words don\u2019t just affect our mindset\u2014they affect our bodies as well. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to be mindful of what we say, and also of what we wish for one another.  <\/p>
So today, I wish myself a beautiful, joyful birthday<\/em><\/p>
